Kunstmuseet i Tønder

kunstmuseet i tønder

The museum was established as the Southern Jutland Museum of Art in 1972.

In 1999, new buildings designed by architect Niels Frithiof Truelsen were added to it.

The museum of art shares buildings with Tønder Cultural History Museum and the Water Tower, which serves as an observation tower. The tower also provides the stage for an exhibition featuring the world-renowned furniture architect Hans J. Wegner.

The museum of art continuously displays exhibitions from the museum's own collection and arranges various special exhibitions throughout the year.

The primary purpose of the museum is to diffuse knowledge of tendencies from 20th and 21st century Northern European art with a special emphasis on Danish and Nordic art.

Artists such as Per Kirkeby, Kehnet Nielsen, Svend Wiig Hansen, Kain Tapper (FI), Ola Billgren (SE), Ingalvur av Reyni (FO) and Ian Mckeever (GB) are represented in the collection.

Eventually, the Museum of Art in Tønder will become The Museum of Southern Jutland's Forum for Nordic Art and Design.
